Build the inspection standard before production
Use the approved sample, current measurement specification, bill of materials, color references, decoration placement and packing instructions as one controlled standard. Record the revision date so the inspection is not made against an earlier sample comment.
Agree which measurements and workmanship points are critical for the style. The checklist for a boned corset gown should not be identical to the checklist for a softly draped dress.
- Approved sample and specification revision
- Measurement points and tolerances
- Fabric, color and trim references
- Decoration placement
- Label and packing instructions
Check fit, measurements and symmetry
Confirm the selected sample sizes against the agreed measurement chart and tolerance. Review bust, waist, hip, garment length and other style-specific points, then check that necklines, straps, sleeves, princess seams and skirt panels appear balanced.
A garment can measure within tolerance and still sit incorrectly. Where fit is commercially important, combine measurements with a visual review on a suitable form or model.
Inspect structure and construction
Review boning, cups, lining, seam allowance, closures and points of strain. Zippers should operate smoothly, hooks and eyes should be secure, and internal support should follow the approved position without twisting or showing through the outer fabric.
Check seam appearance on delicate satin, mesh, lace and layered fabrics. Puckering, tension marks, trapped layers and uneven seam lines are especially visible on formalwear.
Review embellishment, surface and hem finish
Compare appliqué, bead, sequin or embroidery placement with the approved reference. Check security, symmetry where intended, loose threads, missing components and any sharp or uncomfortable attachment points.
Inspect the garment under useful lighting for marks, pulls, shade differences and damage. Confirm the finished length and hem appearance across the outer fabric, lining and layered skirt.
Finish with identity, packing and records
Confirm style, color and size identification as well as approved brand, care and composition labels. Check the folding, protective materials, hangers or garment bags, carton assortment and carton marks against the buyer’s instructions.
Record inspected quantities, findings and corrective actions against the purchase order and production batch. Buyers should define their own acceptance method and any third-party inspection requirement before shipment.
